Species list entered by Richard Jacob. Walk leaders Richard Jacob and Pia van de Venne from Friends of Murrysville Parks.

A very wet day! Weather varied from heavy rain to torrential downpour. The mushrooms of course do not care and will be there anyway. Only four of us on this walk as the rain kept everyone else away. The first half of the park we walked through had a lot of ground cover, mushrroms were present but not so many. At about the half way point the forest opened up and we walked into a patch of Cinnabar-red Chanterelles and Small Chanterelles. Down the hillside were quite a few  Old Man-of-the-woods and Blushers.  A little further along the path was a large patch of Voluminous-latex Milky, enough to collect for a meal. Next was a mossy patch with Witch’s Hats and Parrot mushrooms. I haven’t found these mushrooms very many times and they have beautiful colors. We stated to head down the hill and found an area covered in Black Trumpets. Paper bags were shared and we each collected plenty to cook up once we were at home. As we started to walk back to the pavilion the paths had turned into streams and the mud was becoming treacherous. The last find of the day was Golden Gilled Gerronema. We identified as many species as we could before the damp and cold sent us home.

There are questions about the number of actual species in the Strobilomyces genus so the “Strobilomyces floccopus Old Man-of-the-woods speciment was selected for DNA barcoding. As we don’t see Cantharellus cinnabarinus ( Cinnabar-red Chanterelle), Hygrophorus conicus ( Witch’s Hat) or Hygrophorus psittacinus ( Parrot Mushroom) very often they were also selected for barcoding as well.

Identifications by John Plishke III and Richard Jacob.
