It was a wet and cool Saturday at Frick park but we had a reasonable turnout at this city park. No morels but we did find a number of unusual species. A yellow crust was living on top of a Beech Jelly Roll specimen (Exidia glandulosa), that turns out to be the ascomycetes Hypocrea sulphurea. You can see how the sulfur yellow color is reflected in the name. Another interesting species was Pseudocolus fusiformis (Stinky Squid). The first North American sighting was for the species was made in Pittsburgh in 1915. Since then is has been reported on the east coast from Maine down to Florida and west to Kansas and Texas. So it is good to know, or bad depending on your opinion on invasive species, that it is still here in Pittsburgh.
