
Morning and afternoon classes will be held at the Cooper-Siegel Library on Fox Chapel Road. Each session is $10; the full day is $20.
A free mushroom walk at nearby Salamander Park will follow.
10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – Introduction to Mushrooms
Lead Instructor: Fluff Berger, WPMC Identifier & Recording Secretary
Topics will include various types of mushrooms, general identification features, and their role in the ecosystem. Both edible and poisonous mushrooms will be discussed, along with advice on how to avoid trouble. Additional references will be recommended.
1:30-3:30 p.m. – Jelly, Club & Coral Fungi
Lead Instructor: John Stuart, WPMC Identifier & Past President
This class will cover a variety of interesting mushrooms. These include Jelly Fungi, such as the amber jelly roll (Exidia recisa); Club Fungi, such as Cordyceps and Dead Man’s Fingers; and Coral Fungi, including Clavaria and Ramaria species. There’s even a Jellied False Coral, which fits into two of these categories!
