This was a new location for the club and it was great to see a healthy turnout of both club members and the general public. And it was the first walk that club identifier Beth Dinger has led and Beth did a great job. Despite the recent rain larger mushrooms were still harder to find. However, there were Amanitas, Boletes, Chanterelles and Russulas among other mycorrhizal species. Also plenty of slime mold species in the creeks running down to the lake and a wide variety of other species small and large including a healthy fruiting of Tapinella atrotomentosa (Velvet-footed Pax). We walked through some interesting flat areas with large oaks that have a lot of potential for abundant fruiting’s of Amanitas and Boletes. Beth mentioned she had seen some pictures with lots of mushrooms. Alas it was just a bit too dry that weekend. Hopefully next time will be better. Thank you to Beth Dinger and the US Army Corps of Engineers for organizing the walk and supplying iced water on a hot day.
