The annual Dorothy Fornof Foray at Deer Lakes park was held in July instead of the normal June this year. It is often one of the first walks where we see chanterelles and black trumpets. When the weather has been accommodating we can also find a lot of bolete, amanita and russula species. Technically I can say that we did see some chanterelles and black trumpets but it was pretty much in the singular range. There were plenty of other species in the area to keep our interest including a very nice Pleurotus levis (veiled oyster) specimen and the less frequently observed Hemistropharia albocrenulata that had us puzzled at the identification table.
We typically meet before the walk at the second car park on Kurn Rd and then drive to the third lake on Cattail Dr. Unfortunately we missed a few late arrivals who ended up walking in different locations. Next year we’ll try meeting at the destination car park instead and see how that works out. If we missed you I apologize. I have added some of the species that the other walkers found and posted to iNaturalist to the species list as there were some nice finds.
