It has been a warm couple of weeks and we seem to have had a bit more rain than normal. With the warm evenings the soil temperature will have been rising from frozen into the 50’s Fahrenheit. This is all good news for morel hunters. People track a lot of other spring events like redbud flowering, may apples and asparagus sprouting that coincide with Morel season. I haven’t seen any of those signs yet but it is only a matter of days to a weeks time. I have been monitoring the Morel Hunters website and saw that the first morel in PA had been reported on the 15th April in Bedford county. The morel hunters website has links to rainfall and soil temperature maps provided by the national weather service as well as message boards and other useful information.
While we wait for morels there are lots of other events coming up this week. Mushroom walks on Saturday and Sunday and two mushroom cultivation workshops. Earth Day in Frick Park is this Sunday and our second meeting of the year on Tuesday 21st April with guest speaker Dr. Sarah Meiss from the California University of Pennsylvania. I look forward to seeing you are some of these events.
I live in Upper St. Clair and am originally from farm country in southern Indiana. I have family & friends that live near Collinsville/Troy Illinois. Have received several Facebook photos of Morels already found in that area, apparently they are abundant this year. I always hunt them here (in USC), but last year found very few. The last week of April & first week of May always seems to be the best time here. Hope to find some this year!!!
Found 18 morels today in Upper St Clair. All were nice size, found in one spot around dead elm.
I just found 18 morels today near a few apple trees.near North Park.
I found 14 morels tonight near NP with some real big ones. 37 so far.
Where are you mainly finding them ?
I have them in my lawn in Quakertown

Hello my name is Allison. I was born and raised in WV and I moved to PA about 4 years ago and I can’t find them. Can you please email me and tell me any good locations and dates to start looking. [email protected] thank you
Hi Allison, I don’t know what part of Pa. you are, but central Pa. should be good for morels right now. 5,6,18 I am in the northern part and it is still a little early here and we just started getting rain. morels like rain.Fence rows, the edge of woods under ash trees, dead elm, I have been hunting them for years and they still trick me so I don’t think you will ever figure them out, but if you find a spot, they should grow there or close for a few years after that, but don’t pick by the root pinch them off and put them in a netted bag. IF you have young ones put a few in your bag and shake it around the area to scatter the spores for next year. S.W.
Found 36 this morning. Medium size. Blair county, Altoona. I think I’m turning into one.
