After the mushroom course in the morning attendees took a walk in the woods to see what they could find. It had been very dry in the run up to the class and hot and dry on the day so there was not a huge amount of variety. Despite the dry weather we did find quite a lot of honey mushroom and aborted entoloma’s. I have chosen Armillaria gallica, to represent the honey mushroom species because the two Armillaria species we have analysed were both found to be Armillaria gallica by DNA sequencing. Also the specimens we found had a bulbous base which is consistent with Armillaria gallica.
We saw a couple of other visitors to the park find some hen of the woods mushrooms but no one on our walk found any.
