Ranger Andy Lariviere led us on a gentle climb up the hills of Ryerson Station. The weather was wonderful for a walk in the woods.
About a dozen people joined us for the Southern walk, mostly folks who were relatively new to mushrooming. We were thrilled with an extensive fruiting of chanterelles–everybody got as much as they wanted to collect. Andy decided that he likes the flavor of Lactarius piperatus and will be drying his collection and powdering it as a spice.
The White Jelly Roll we found was unusual in that all collections had inclusions of plant stems. My identification may be wrong.
This was the first time I’ve been able to apply my new knowledge from NEMF 2017. I was able to identify our Artist’s Conk as G. lobatum, the softer Artist’s Conk. If you can easily dent the cap with your fingernail, you have G. lobatum and not G. applanatum. I think there’s also a difference in appearance, but I’ll have to find a lot more of them before I’m confident to describe the visual difference.
