Species list from not the Black Friday walk at Hartwood Acres on 11/20/2022

Thanks to the hardcore crew of dedicated mushroom hunters that came out on a very cold Sunday. Starting temperature was about 20F and it warmed up to freezing, 32F. Due to personal travel reasons the walk was held approximately one week early that originally planned. This was the first real cold snap of the fall/winter and as it had been unseasonably warm up to this point caught quite a few mushrooms in the snow and ice. We started with a walk down into mushroom valley and found a good selection of fall species. There were some perfect looking Galerina marginata (Deadly galerina) and Hypholoma lateritium (Brick top) that had been frozen in place and covered under a layer of snow, plus lots of more solid wood rotters like Daldinia childiae (Carbon Balls) and Xylobolus frustulatus (Ceramic Parchment). Over at the other side of the park in some conifers we found a handful of additional species like Scleroderma areolatum (Leopard Earthball) and an old Phaeolus schweinitzii (Dyer’s pollypore). We had one very keen young boy with sharp eyes with us who found the smallest mushroom of the day, Mollisia cinerea (Common Grey Disco Fungus).

There was an interesting wasp gall find too, Callirhytis lanata (Woolly Oak Gall Wasp) that was indeed nice and woolly.
