Big turn out for this chanterelle hunt. I counted 5 species of chanterelle but people were mainly picking smooth chanterelles, black trumpets and cinnabar-red chanterelles. Over 50 species of mushrooms identified and many more left on the table before we called it a day.
Having flicked through Gary Lincoff’s “Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms” for quite a few years I always wonder how you find lots of these species. The answer is of course wait for a wet year and you will be stumbling across many colorful mushrooms like the Clavaria zollingeri and Cortinarius violaceus while picking bountiful chanterelles.

Great photos of the purple coral! I would recommend a different name other than “Clavulina amethystina” since that appears to be a European species. I would propose “Clavaria zollingeri” as the name instead. Thoughts?
I checked a few other sites and it does indeed seem that Clavulina amethystina is only found in Europe. Thanks for the correction. I have updated the species list and image annotations. A Mushroom Catalog page for Clavaria zollingeri will be created at a later date.
