The weather in the run up to Sundays walk could not have been better, plenty of rain and lots of heat to really get those mushrooms going. Weather on the day was a little less to be desired with a heat advisory and temperatures over 90F and humidity sky high. We were under the cover of the leaf canopy but it was still very hot. For those that did make it out were rewarded with black trumpets aplenty. We saw 4 different chanterelle species including the first of the seasons Cantharellus flavolateritius ( American smooth Chanterelle) and the less frequently observed black trumpet species Craterellus foetidus. Other species of note were one or more Hydnellum species. We normally find the dried out blacked remains but this year there were plenty of fresh specimens. There were an abundance of larger mycorrhizal species, amanitas, boletes and russulas along with plenty of slime molds and other small things.
