Walk leader Mike Ott. A hearty band of 13 Adults & 3 Children braved the rain and hunted mushroom in North Park. After having no rain for several weeks, the group wished the rain had held off for a few more hours. Because of the recent dry spell, there were not many mushrooms available. However, walk leader Mike Ott and Club Identifier Dick Dougall found nearly twenty different mushrooms.
Valerie Baker found the most unique find. This was Conifer Parchment (Peniophora gigantea) on a dead pine log. Its new name is Phlebiopsis gigantea. It appears to look like a smear of bluish paint over a section of the log. We will be checking, but this appears to be a new mushroom for our Life List.
Enough Smooth Chanterelles were found to fill one of our larger ID “boats.” These will make a tasty meal for two of the participants. A number of small turkey-tail like mushrooms were found. Due to the recent dry conditions, even the number of Russulas found was very limited.
